| The Soka Spirit movement began in the SGI-USA to correctly identify the heart of Nichiren’s teachings. The goal of this Web site is to clarify the conviction and practice of the Soka Gakkai in contrast with the views and behavior of Nichiren Shoshu, in light of Nichiren’s teachings. |

Welcome to the Soka University of America (SUA) web-site. Both the Calabasas campus, nestled in a valley of the Santa Monica Mountains, and the Aliso Viejo campus, just two miles from the Pacific Ocean near Laguna Beach, manifest unique educational missions. Each is essential to the overall mission of Soka University of America. I invite you to click on the picture of each campus to discover more about our history, our academic programs, our exciting growth and our founding spirit. |

| Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, the founder of Soka Gakkai, published the Value Creating Educational System on November 18, 1930 to realize an ideal education by creating value (or soka) in the lives of students. His successor, Josei Toda, tried to implement his mentor's educational philosophy but died on April 2, 1958 without completely realizing that ideal. It was Daisaku Ikeda, Toda's disciple, who was finally able to realize the dream of Makiguchi by establishing Soka University on April 2, 1971. April 2, therefore, became not only the death anniversary of Mr. Toda, but also the founding of Soka University. Initially, the university had four departments in three faculties. |
